Help support the music program at ICRPS!
The Ukulele Kings
The Ukulele Kings workshops and concert were a huge success! To see fifty students in each of the two one-hour workshops quickly picking up the ukulele and having a blast, warmed my heart and got me that much more excited and pumped for the building of our ukulele program. Thank you so very much Ben, Pat, and Steve for providing these amazing workshops to our ICRPS students. Your evening concert was phenomenal! A tremendous thank you to Music is the Foundation for your $250 donation, bringing our evening fundraising total to $1000. A very special thank you also to Brent DeNure and Ten-Seven Cafe & Lounge for sponsoring the Ukulele Kings workshops. You have helped to excite 100 students, and helped to provide them with an amazing experience! I would also like to thank Tom Morrison from the Chatham This Week for coming out to the workshop, and a fabulous article written in the weekly paper.
THE UKULELE KINGS
Come and join us Tuesday October 8, 2019 at Ten Seven Cafe & Lounge for an evening concert with The Ukulele Kings! Entry by donation, with all proceeds funding our music ukulele program! Coming from Lansing Michigan, these guys will not disappoint. Drop in between 6:00 and 8:00. Read more about The Ukulele Kings under our “Fundraising” tab.
*Grade 7 and 8 students will be participating in an ukulele workshop presented by The Ukulele Kings earlier in the day!
I have been in contact with Ben Hassenger of the Ukulele Kings. I have been lucky enough to get to know Ben through attending two ukulele workshops in Wallaceburg (with the Ukulele Kings), and attending the three day Mighty Uke Day workshops in Lansing Michigan this past May.
Ben works as a music facilitator with Special Education children, teaches ukulele to students and teachers in Michigan school systems, seniors at Prime Time in East Lansing, as well as group and individual ukulele lessons at Elderly Instruments, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Michigan State University’s Community Music School. He plays guitar and ukulele in the bands Blue Jello and The Ukulele Kings and is the co-founder of the Lansing (MI) Area Ukulele Group and the organizer of the Mighty Uke Day festival, Interlochen’s Uketoberfest, and the Midwest Uke Camp in Olivet. He is also a prolific songwriter, with two of his songs about the Detroit Tigers enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Ben’s a fun and involving performer with a variety of original songs about dogs, food, love, Michigan, and the other important things in life.
Now the news…, I got thinking of how exciting it would be to have the Ukulele Kings come to ICRPS to do a workshop with our intermediate students, and then host an open concert for all of our ICRPS family and friends, in an effort to raise funds, and reach our goal, so that we could continue to purchase ukuleles for a program here at ICRPS. Speaking with Ben, he was more than ecstatic about the idea, but knew that the cost for the Ukulele Kings to come to ICRPS would likely be a deterrent, as we were attempting to raise funds (not spend them). He had offered to come himself to reduce the cost, and was willing to talk further about other possibilities. Speaking with Brent DeNure, owner of Affinity Jewelers and Ten-Seven Cafe and Lounge, we have been made a fantastic offer. An advocate of music education himself, Brent has offered that Ten-Seven Cafe and Lounge sponsor the cost of the Ukulele Kings to come to ICRPS for the workshop, and has offered the Lounge to host the concert! We are now all in the midst of discussing dates, etc. Please stay tuned for more information about this amazing event! All donations at the concert will go to fulfilling our goal and providing a rich music experience for our students here at ICRPS.
Proceeds from the hot dog sales of May/June 2019 helped raise $1597, and will aid in purchasing student ukuleles!
